Every safe ride begins before the engine starts. Whether you’re riding across Omaha or taking the scenic route out to the Sandhills, completing a motorcycle pre-ride checklist helps prevent breakdowns, accidents, and costly mistakes. This quick inspection can make the difference between a smooth ride and a call for help.
Use the T-CLOCS Method
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends a six-point inspection system known as T-CLOCS. It stands for:
- Tires and Wheels
- Controls
- Lights and Electrical
- Oil and Other Fluids
- Chassis
- Stands
This process helps identify wear and tear or mechanical issues that could affect your safety.
1. Tires and Wheels
- Check tire pressure and tread depth
- Look for cracks, bulges, or nails
- Spin wheels to ensure even rotation
- Inspect spoke tension or cast wheels for damage
2. Controls
- Test levers, pedals, and throttle for smooth movement
- Inspect cables for fraying or corrosion
- Make sure handlebars are tight and aligned
3. Lights and Electrical
- Confirm headlights, tail lights, and brake lights all work
- Test turn signals and horn
- Check battery terminals and charge level
4. Oil and Fluids
- Check engine oil level and clarity
- Inspect coolant and brake fluid
- Look under the bike for any signs of leaks
5. Chassis
- Examine frame for cracks or damage
- Check chain or belt tension
- Inspect suspension and alignment
6. Stands
- Test the side and center stands for proper function
- Ensure springs retract smoothly
- Confirm the stand doesn’t interfere with other parts
