Before heading out on the water, it’s not enough to check the fuel gauge and throw on a life jacket. A solid pre-departure boating checklist helps ensure a safe, smooth trip whether you’re launching at Carter Lake, Branched Oak, or Lake Zorinsky.

Boating accidents often happen due to simple oversights. Use this quick guide to stay prepared and protected every time you launch.

1. Safety Equipment Check

Make sure the following gear is onboard, functional, and accessible:

  • Life jackets for each person
  • Throwable flotation device
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Visual distress signals (flares or lights)
  • Sound-producing device (whistle or horn)

Check expiration dates on flares and fire extinguishers. In Nebraska, life jackets are required for all children under 13.

2. Mechanical and Electrical Systems

Before turning the key, inspect:

  • Fuel level and lines for leaks
  • Battery charge and terminals
  • Engine oil and coolant levels
  • Navigation lights and horn
  • Bilge pump operation

Start the engine briefly at the dock to confirm everything runs smoothly.

3. Navigation and Documentation

Have the following ready:

  • Current registration and permits
  • Maps or GPS
  • Weather forecast
  • Boating license or education card if required

Also notify someone on land about your destination and estimated return time.

4. Personal Prep and Emergency Plans

Make sure you pack:

  • Sunscreen
  • Water and snacks
  • Dry bags for valuables
  • First-aid kit
  • Emergency contact numbers

Remind passengers about basic rules and what to do if someone falls overboard.
