If you’re in a car accident and hit another vehicle, fence, or building, property damage coverage is what helps pay to fix it. Without it, you’re responsible for paying out of pocket.

Nebraska requires this type of liability coverage as part of your auto insurance policy, but many drivers don’t fully understand what it covers—or how much they need.

What Does Property Damage Liability Cover?

Property damage liability insurance helps pay for repairs to another person’s property when you’re at fault in an accident. This includes:

  • Other vehicles
  • Buildings
  • Fences
  • Mailboxes
  • Utility poles
  • Landscaping

It does not cover damage to your own vehicle. That’s where collision coverage comes in.

How Much Coverage Do You Need in Nebraska?

Nebraska law requires a minimum of $25,000 in property damage liability. But that doesn’t mean it’s enough. With the price of vehicles and repairs going up, one accident could exceed that limit quickly.

Many drivers choose to carry higher limits to protect their savings and avoid paying out of pocket if the damage goes beyond the minimum.

Does It Cover Parking Lot Incidents?

Yes. If you hit a parked car or back into a fence, your property damage coverage would apply. Just remember, it only covers the other person’s property, not yours.
