What Is a Claim in Insurance?

If you’ve ever had damage to your home, vehicle, or business, you’ve likely had to file a claim. But what is a claim, and how does it actually work?

A claim is a formal request to your insurance company asking for payment after you experience a covered loss. Whether it’s storm damage in Omaha or a fender bender on Dodge Street, a claim helps you recover financially from an unexpected event.

When to File a Claim

You file a claim when something happens that’s covered under your policy. Common examples include:

  • A car accident
  • Hail damage to your roof
  • Theft or vandalism
  • A house fire
  • A slip-and-fall on your property

The process typically begins with contacting your agent or your insurance company directly. You’ll be asked to provide documentation and possibly work with an adjuster.

How the Claim Process Works

  1. Report the incident as soon as possible.
  2. Provide photos, receipts, or police reports if needed.
  3. Work with an adjuster if the company sends one.
  4. Receive payment, if the loss is covered and approved.

You’ll usually pay your deductible first, and then the insurance company covers the remaining costs, up to your policy limits.
